Since childhood I have been fascinated by the study of the history of World War II. At the time the conflict consumed the entire globe. It spread like wildfire then settled into a seemingly endless challenge to survive. Equally endless was the depths of human suffering and loss of life. Millions were sent to concentration camps to be methodically murdered, millions died of starvation and cold on the Eastern Front and millions died in battle. The cost of war was horrendous.
With the Old Breed: at Peleliu and Okinawa by E. B. Sledge
Eugene B. Sledge was part of the Pacific War's famous 1st Marine Division-3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. Even after extensive training he was shocked when he was thrown into the fight on the island of Peleliu. Based on notes that he secretly kept, this book is written with utter simplicity and searing honesty.
